Police: Alcohol and reckless driving blamed for crash

Police were sent to the crash scene in the 2800 block of Eastern Avenue just after 2 a.m.

A witness reported the driver of a southbound pickup truck reportedly lost control while passing another vehicle.  The truck hit landscaping and a utility pole. 

The front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries for which he was treated and released at a local hospital.

The driver, 21-year-old Norman Conklin of Davenport, suffered a “life-threatening head injury” according to police.   Conklin was taken by ambulance to an area hospital and later airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City.

“Alcohol and reckless driving are the suspected cause of this crash,” said a spokesman for Davenport Police.
