(CNN) — Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois will be released from the hospital after suffering a stroke in January, according to a Thursday press release.

The announcement from the first term Republican’s office said he will continue his recovery as an out patient in his home state.

“Mark has progressed to the point where he can move home with his family. He will continue to work on his recovery as an out-patient at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago,” the release read. “He has begun a rigorous walking study program to further his mobility and independence while maintaining his schedule with staff.”

“We also thank everyone who has shared their prayers and wishes for his return to the U.S. Senate as soon as possible,” the statement concluded.

Kirk, 52, checked himself into a hospital at the end of January and subsequently underwent a successful surgery to relieve swelling around his brain stemming from the stroke.
