A Hy-Vee clerk saved an 87-year-old Davenport woman from falling victim to a scam.
Someone claiming to be from Publisher's Clearing House called her and congratulated her on winning $100,000 a week for life. They then instructed her to wire $2000 for the taxes ahead of time to Georgia via Western Union.
She went to wire it at the Hy-Vee on West Kimberly in Davenport and luckily for her, a clerk at the service desk stepped in.
"He says do you know this lady, I said no I do not. He said I would advise you not to send any money. To me, this seems like a scam," The victim told us.
The Davenport woman is calling the Hy-Vee employee her guardian angel. She left the grocery store and put the money back in her bank account. The employee told us he was just doing his job and would have alerted anyone of a potential scam.
The scammers continued to call, even telling her to go toWal-Martto send the money instead. When the woman told them she thought it was a scam, they told her they thought she was a nice lady and that she would owe them an apology when they come with the check.
We called the number and when we asked them if it was a scam, they hung up on us.
