Police: Puppy beaten to death with baseball bat

Zachary Scott Meerdink was arrested and charged with two counts of animal abuse after he allegedly beat a terrier puppy to death with a baseball bat.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Police say they arrested a 30-year-old man after he allegedly beat a puppy to death with an aluminum baseball bat.

Jail records show Zachary Meerdink, 30, faces two counts – a misdemeanor animal abuse charge and a felony probation violation charge.  He was booked into the Scott County Jail just after 6 p.m. Monday, December 19, 2011.

The small terrier puppy reportedly urinated on the floor of the apartment Meerdink and his girlfriend share in the 5900 block of Elmore Avenue in Davenport, Iowa.

Meerdink allegedly responded by taking the puppy outside and beating it to death with the bat.

Meerdink was held in lieu of $2,000 cash-only bond.
