Muscatine home sustains $50K in damage due to fire

The fire started in the attached garage before spreading to the second floor of the house through the balloon construction walls.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Fire crews were called to a home on Kansas Street in Muscatine around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 22nd.

The fire started in the attached garage before spreading to the second floor of the house through the balloon construction walls, according to Captain Harold Bennitt.

Fire crews got it under control within an hour of arriving.

Relatives say family members were inside the home when the fire started and one sustained minor burns that were treated on scene by paramedics, In addition, one fire fighter sustained a minor injure when a part of the ceiling collapsed.

The structure sustained approximately $50,000 in damage. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
