Reckless driver critically injured after being shot by police following pursuit

Emergency medical services are responding to an officer involved shooting at 9th Street and Division Street in Davenport.

UPDATE: The individual shot by a Davenport Police Officer following a reckless driving incident and vehicle pursuit was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and is in critical condition, according to a media release from the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

The name of the injured suspect is not being released at this time, nor are the names of the Davenport Police Officers who fired at the suspect.

According to the release:

On May 16, 2018 at approximately 10:44 am the Davenport Police Department responded to a vehicle involved hit and run in the 600 Block of N. Division Street. The Suspect vehicle struck two vehicles on W. 6th Street just east of Division. Davenport Policer Officer attempted to interact with suspect vehicle which fled through a residential yard onto N. Division street striking a building on the northwest side of 6th and Division, then striking a third vehicle before continuing northbound on Division Street. Officers attempted to apprehend the driver at the intersection of N. Division and W 9th Street where the incident escalated which resulted in two rounds being fired from a Davenport Police Officers service weapon. Officer’s names are not being released at this time.

The individual was transported to Genesis East and later air lifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals listed in critical condition.

The area of the incident remains blocked off for continuing investigations. The investigation is being conducted by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Criminal Investigations.

Per the Davenport Police Department policy the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending investigations.

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- An officer-involved shooting has forced a half-mile of Division Street to close.

A reckless driver crashed into multiple cars and a building on Wednesday morning, May 16, according to Major Jeff Bladel with the Davenport Police Department.   A passerby flagged down an officer to report the alleged hit and runs.

After trying to stop the driver, the officer fired their weapon.  That person was reportedly taken to the hospital.

There was no word on how many people were involved or the extent of any injuries.

Because it was an officer-involved shooting, the Scott County Sheriff's Department will take over the investigation.  Any updates will come from them.

Division Street between 4th Street and 10th Street was expected to remain closed into the afternoon.
