ATALISSA, Iowa -- A 60-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after officials say he fired shots at motorists and was involved in a standoff with police.

Charles Johnston

On Thursday, January 11th, gunshots were reported at a rest area near Mile Marker 265 on Interstate 80, according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.  This area is north of Atalissa, Iowa, near the border of Muscatine County and Cedar County.

Police said the suspect, later identified as 60-year-old Charles Johnston, took off westbound, got off at Exit 265 "where he fired more rounds at motorists at the BP gas station."

Troopers found the suspect on a county road and that's where gunfire was exchanged between police and Johnston, according to the police statement.

There were no injuries reported.

Johnston was arrested and held in the Cedar County Jail.  He is facing charges of attempted murder and assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon.
