Crews search for railway employee who fell into the Mississippi River

The Mississippi River north of the Quad Cities has been closed because of an investigation.

EAST DUBUQUE, Illinois -- The search is suspended north of the Quad Cities for a railway employee who fell into the Mississippi River.

After 7 a.m. Monday, July 3rd, rescue crews got word that the employee who operates the Dubuque Railroad Bridge, fell into the river, according to East Dubuque Fire Chief Joe Heim.  Surveillance video shows that the employee fell in around 3:40 a.m., but nobody knew the employee was missing for a few hours.

Rescue crews closed the waterway during their initial search of the employee, but ended up reopening the river to commercial traffic, Heim said.  Crews are continuing  their recovery efforts over a 30-mile stretch from Dubuque, Iowa to Bellevue, Iowa.

Emergency responders stopped the search to prevent conflicts with the thousands of people attending the Dubuque airshow and fireworks.
