Disco beat inspires Hands-Only CPR class in Davenport

“Keep pushing and keep the rhythm,” said Brooke Barnes, Scott County Health Department, on Hands-Only CPR.

DAVENPORT,  Iowa - It's a thumping beat from the 1970's that some people would like to forget. But these days, Disco is back, and it's keeping people "Stayin' Alive."

Scott County employees are discovering how to save lives with this blast from the past.

"It makes it fun and memorable," said Brooke Barnes, Scott County Health Department.

Hands-Only CPR is easy to learn and very effective during an emergency.

During a class in Davenport on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, the Bee-Gees' beat provides percussion for compressions.

"If you compress along with the song, you will be on the right track," said instructor Chuck Gipson, Medic EMS.

Scott County employees are learning the life-saving technique in a matter of minutes.

"It's very easy," Gipson said.  "There's two steps: push hard and fast, and call 9-1-1."

Hands-Only CPR also requires no mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

"You never know what could happen to a family member, your child, or somebody that you just see," Barnes said.

The faster CPR starts, the better chances are for survival.

"It is so important for bystanders to do CPR prior to emergency responders arriving," Gipson said.

Scott County employees wanted to hold the session for part of its wellness campaign.

"If someone is in need of CPR, then I will be refreshed with knowledge of how to assist," said Christina McDonough, Scott County Health Department.

Compressing to the music, this class could soon be saving lives.

"If it's that easy to learn, it's going to be that much easier to remember," said McDonough.

Medic EMS in Davenport plans to offer more training sessions in the future.
