ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- The bells and the red colored kettles are symbols of the holiday season.

"When you see Santa Claus, bells, you often think about the Salvation Army Christmas kettles," says Quad Cities Salvation Army Coordinator Major Gary Felton.

It's money that stays right here in the community.

"The money we collect here stays here in the Quad Cities and provides services to needy families," says Felton.

Leaders are worried this year people in need will be short changed.

"We're seeing we don't have the kettle ringers this year. That has us nervous at this point," says Felton.

The goal is to raise $815,000. Right now they're $500,000 short.

But thanks to an anonymous donor, on Saturday December 10, all donations will be matched up to $10,000 on both sides of the river.

"That's a huge shot in the arm for us especially in light of the fact we're behind our Christmas goal," says Felton.

It's the step in the right direction, and it's the start of a final push to make meaningful change.

Another anonymous donor pledged $5,000 if all 250 bell ringing volunteer spots get filled Saturday December 10, and December 17.
