Construction crews working through the cold

The weather usually has a big impact on construction work but as the temperatures take a tumble, you still might see some crews working through the cold.

BETTENDORF, Iowa - The weather usually has a big impact on construction work but as the temperatures take a tumble, you still might see some crews working through the cold.

A change in weather doesn't always give construction workers a break. For construction workers, building homes is a year round job.

“You have the roofers who don't get much of a break up there,” says Carey Nowack with Heartland Builders.

For construction workers like Luke Stearman, weather changes don't slow down his day, even in the cold.

“I got long johns, pants, long underwear, t shirt, long shirt, sweat shirt, coat and hand gloves. To be honest with you, I’d rather sweat all day,” says Stearman.

Working long days in the cold has some benefits for construction crews. Dropping temperatures freeze slushy mud, making it still possible to finish concrete projects.

“They just add chlorides and hot water to help them set up and they are blanketed this time of year,” added Nowack.

Concrete can take longer to set in the winter but it doesn't stop work completely.

“Exterior flat work is slowing down and getting poured now but if the temperature gets a little warmer you might get a little bit done,” says Nowack.

No matter how cold it gets, Stearman finishes his day strong because he's motivated by one thing.

“Money. You get paid to be out here you just have to keep going until the days over,” says Stearman.

When temperatures drop below 10 degrees it can be hard on workers and construction equipment so they try and find work indoors.
