Hotel in downtown Bettendorf could soon be gone; replaced with apartments

If the project goes forward, construction could begin as early as this March.

BETTENDORF, Iowa - The Twin Bridges Motor Inn has been in Bettendorf since 1961.

"The Twin Bridges as it is today is a project that could certainly use some TLC," said Jeff Reiter, Bettendorf's economic development director.

The city is considering an agreement to put two new five-story apartment buildings there.

"Very urban design, very, very, new type of development opportunity," said Reiter.

The project would have 135 apartment units and estimated to cost $22 million. The developer, Twin Bridges Partners, LP, are asking for $750,000 in a forgivable economic loan and a 20-year rebate on taxes, from the city of Bettendorf.

The owners of Riverside Grille down the street say they're excited about the idea of bringing more people downtown.

"I think it (will be) an increase in business for us, we have so many sports fans that I think it will be an increase in business to have that in walking distance," said Kourtney Burkhardt, manager, Riverside Grille.

The restaurant employees can't wait to see what's next.

"I think it's looking great down here and I believe it's yet to get better," said Burkhardt.

If approved, the city said construction could start as early as March.
