CrossFit Port Byron Works to be More Than Just a Gym

The past five months have not been easy for Ted Allen and his wife Theresa.

PORT BYRON, Illinois - The past five months have not been easy for Ted Allen and his wife Theresa.

"We found out back in July that she had ovarian cancer," Ted said.

Theresa is undergoing chemotherapy, and even though the treatment is going well, the Allens have needed help along the way. CrossFit Port Byron Co-owners Ryan and Amber Grage have been Ted and Theresa's trainers for the past two years, but they also have made them meals they can freeze, so Ted doesn't have to cook as much.

"It's a lot more than just a gym. It's a community, so for the most part, any time we see a family member struggling, or with a need, we try to assist them," Ryan said about his business Monday, November 28, 2016.

Monday, Ted had Ryan and Amber come over to their house to bring Theresa some food, but inside was WQAD News 8 and Ascentra Credit Union. Ted gave them the Pay It Forward Award, for doing good things in the community.

Ryan and Amber don't plan on stopping their donations of stew, soup, and bread anytime soon, and Ted is forever grateful for it.

"You learn when something this happens, how people come together, and help you," Ted said. "It's really awesome."
