DAVENPORT, Iowa-- To some he's Scott Searle, but to others he's the Quad Cities Yo-Yo Man. And now, he's giving back to the community he says supports him with his struggle with addiction every day.
WQAD News 8 brought you the story behind the man who runs with a yo-yo back in August.
"I get honks from truck drivers, I get honks from firetrucks. People message me on Facebook and say I saw you here, I saw you there," says Searle.
After sharing his personal struggle with alcoholism with the world, the community has embraced him as one of their own.
For Searle, the attention keeps him accountable and sober.
"I know I cannot fall back because I've got all these people looking at me," says Searle.
And for that reason, he travels with a special delivery, a backpack filled with yo-yo's. He's giving back in his own way.
"Just for me to give somebody else the opportunity to have a little bit of happiness, I love yo-yoing," says Searle.
On Wednesday afternoon, Searle delivered yo-yo's to students at Hayes Elementary School in Davenport. He also gave the kids a crash course on how to use them.
He's sharing his hand held piece of mind with the community that's always with him through his ups and downs. It's support this fighter relies on.
"Yeah, it's cool. But make no mistake, I may look like I've got it together, but I have dark days," says Searle.
But for all the support he gets, he gives it back full circle.
"There's so much unhappiness in the world. Hopefully I'm that sunshine in somebody's day," says Searle.
Searle got the free yo-yo's as a gift from a yo-yo distributor, Return Top Shop, in Canada after they heard his story.
This coming Saturday, Searle is giving back to the community in a different way. He is hosting a free community Thanksgiving Day feast at Timothy's House of Hope on W. 4th Street in downtown Davenport. He says anyone from the community is invited.
