ROCK ISLAND, Illinois — Succumbing to injuries from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, a Rock Island man died five days after his wife died in what police are calling “a murder/suicide attempt.”

The shooting happened Monday, October 24, 2016 in the 3900 block of 20th Avenue.  It was shortly before 1 p.m. when police responded, according to previous reports.

John A. Elliott, age 94, had told a relative that “he had shot his wife, 91-year-old Helen N. Elliott, and that he intended to kill himself,” read a statement from Rock Island Deputy Chief of Police Jason Foy.

Officers on scene “attempted to make contact with the occupants” but were unable to, Foy said.  Officers went into the home around 2:45 p.m.

“Helen Elliott was found deceased from a single gunshot wound,” read Foy’s statement.  “John Elliott was found alive and suffering from multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds which has been determined to be a murder/suicide attempt.”

John Elliott was taken to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to another, according to Foy’s statement.   On Friday, October 28 John Elliott died from his injuries.
