DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad has canceled a day of campaigning on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to attend funeral services for his father-in-law.

Branstad’s spokesman Ben Hammes says the governor will attend services Wednesday for Richard C. “Dick” Johnson at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church in Des Moines. A burial will be held later at Resthaven Cemetery.

Hammes confirmed Johnson died Sunday at 91 at a Des Moines care center. No cause of death was released.

Branstad was originally scheduled to campaign for Republican candidates at events around Iowa. He will resume his public schedule Thursday.

Johnson was the father of Christine Branstad, the governor’s wife. Johnson was a sales manager for Electrical Engineering and Equipment Company in Iowa before retiring in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Clara, five children, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
