BETTENDORF, Iowa — In an effort to keep building on its “bicycle friendly community” reputation, Bettendorf leaders are unveiling a new program aimed at encouraging businesses to install more bike racks.

The new Bicycle Rack Cost Sharing Program is the first of its kind in the metro Quad-Cities, said city spokesperson Lauran Haldeman. Requested by the Bettendorf Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, it sets aside $5,000 a year to help fund shared bike rack installation.

This allows any business within city limits to buy city-approved bike racks with a one-time match of up to $500. The city is partnering with Crawford Company out of Rock Island to manufacture specific city-designed racks.

Bettendorf earned a bronze level designation as a bike-friendly community in 2015 from the League of American Bicyclists. The bike rack program is part of a systemic effort to achieve a silver or gold rating, Haldeman said.

More information about the program and how to participate is available here.
