BETTENDORF, Iowa-- These two ladies have lived on this block off of Middle Road and Woodfield Drive for the past 30 years, and as they look at sketches of a proposed project that would go right across the street, they get excited.
It's a proposal to the Bettendorf Planning and Zoning Commission to open another Greatest Grains. It's a health foods store and deli that only has one location right now, in Davenport's Hilltop neighborhood on Harrison Street.
The proposal goes to the commission on Wednesday night where there is a meeting and public hearing on the matter. City leaders say the project fits what the land is already zoned for. It can either get denied, deferred or approved. If the proposal is approved, it goes to the Bettendorf City Council for the final vote.
Critics are concerned the new location would create too much street congestion for the area near Duck Creek Tire. But the city is supportive of the plan.
"This is an opportunity for us to have something unique that Bettendorf's not had before. We have a lot of restaurants, but not a lot of healthy options. This is something that will be embraced by the citizens," says Bettendorf Community Development Director Bill Connors.
Residents in the proposed area say it would be a great location for student use as well.
The meeting is Wednesday night at 5:30 and it's open to the public.
