Historic Clinton building gets new lease on life

“It’s amazing,” said Julie Allesee, on the Roosevelt School Apartments in Clinton, Iowa

CLINTON, Iowa -

A century-old school building is getting a new lease on life in Clinton.

That's after a nearly $5 million renovation created the Roosevelt School Apartments.

On Tuesday, crews put the finishing touches on the remarkable project.

"I think most people are going to walk into the building and say, wow," said Matt Hauge, Community Housing Initiatives.

With each brush stroke, they're bringing back a 19th Century treasure.

"I tell you what, it's amazing," said Julie Allesee, a member of the Clinton City Council, who pushed hard for the project.

Federal grant money paid for most of the year-long renovations.

These days, you can feel the history in every apartment. Residents in the 16 apartments will live in former classrooms and offices.

"Once you see the strength of the design that was done over 100 years ago, it really looks like it was always that way," Hauge said.
