ROCK ISLAND — LaMaree Wilson’s new trial ended much the same way his first one did – with the East Moline teen found guilty of murder for the May 2015 shooting death of Zac Phillips of Colona.
This time it was a jury, rather than the judge, that handed down the verdict. In addition to the murder charge, Wilson was also found guilty of aggravated battery with a firearm for shooting and injuring Eric Roberson, another teen. Police described the incident as a marijuana deal gone bad. The shooting happened midday on a weekday near Black Hawk College, and forced the lock down of two nearby elementary schools.
Wilson was originally sentenced to 60 years in prison, but was granted a retrial earlier this year after withdrawing the guilty plea that led to his sentencing.
This story will be updated when more information comes in from the trial.
