Volunteers are returning a Davenport park to the way it looked more than a century ago.
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, electricians from IBEW Local #145 helped install colored lighting on the street car pavilion at Schuetzen Park. The pavilion was built in 1911, and the new light fixtures were installed in approximately the same locations as the originals.
"Our community at large has lost so many things from our history that were important to our forefathers, fore-bearers really. Schuetzen Park is a good example of what was almost lost, but was saved," said Kory Darnall, a member of the Schuetzen Park Gilde.
The street car pavilion was constructed more than a century ago with bequeathed funds from Heinrich Koehler, a local brewery tycoon. It is the only original building still left at the park.
Today, the pavilion is used as a picnic shelter.
The project was paid for by donations from various individuals and community organizations, as well as grants.
