WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — An off-duty Black Hawk County sheriff’s deputy has been accused of having a weapon with him while intoxicated.

A news release from the Sheriff’s Office says Waterloo police arrested Erick McFerran, 34, on Friday, Oct.14. He’s charged with carrying weapons. A woman who answered a phone listed for him hung up. Online court records don’t list an attorney who could comment for McFerran.

He’s been placed on administrative leave. He joined the department in June 2015.

Sheriff Tony Thompson says the department will have no further comment on the personnel incident.

Court records say Waterloo police were called to a gas station about 3:30 a.m. Friday after someone reported an assault. The records say McFerran had assaulted one person. Waterloo police say McFerran didn’t display the handgun during the incident.
