Semi driver involved in fatal wreck charged with using electronic device

The driver of a pickup died after being involved in a crash with a semi on Illinois Highway 40.

BUREAU COUNTY, Illinois --  The driver of a pickup died after being involved in a crash with a semi on Illinois Highway 40.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2016 near 1800 North Avenue, according to a statement from the Bureau County Sheriff's Office. Authorities did not immediately share details of the crash.

The pickup driver, a 29-year-old Daniel Nelson of Wyanet was pronounced dead by Bureau County Coroner Janice Wamhoff, according to the statement.  The semi driver, 40-year-old Casey Horner, was charged with improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed, and use of an electronic communication device.

The sheriff's department said that they were being assisted by the Bureau County Coroner and the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstructionist in their ongoing investigation.
