One killed in car-deer accident south of Muscatine

The accident occurred shortly after 6 a.m.

MUSCATINE — A 37-year-old Muscatine man was killed early Tuesday morning after his pickup truck collided with a deer on Iowa Highway 38.

Police say Alek Cuellar, of Muscatine, was driving south on 38 when a deer suddenly entered the road and his truck hit it head on. After striking the animal, the truck left the road and came to rest near a tree, police said.

Cuellar was transported to UnityPoint Hospital in Muscatine where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Harvest time in the Midwest is a particularly dangerous time for deer-vehicle accidents, experts say.
