Hurricane Matthew Churns in Caribbean

CHICAGO (AP) — Gov. Bruce Rauner says an anti-poverty group in Chicago will provide refuge for 75 children who were in the path of Hurricane Matthew after fleeing Central America.

Rauner said Friday, Oct. 7, the Heartland Alliance will care for the children for the next 30 days. They are unaccompanied minors who went to Florida to leave the poverty and violence of their home countries.

Illinois officials gave the Heartland Alliance permission to go above their occupation capacity to provide shelter to the children. The group will be adding staff and volunteers who have already undergone background checks.
