Damage survey points to EF-1 tornado in Muscatine County

After a preliminary damage survey, the National Weather Service is reporting that the storm that blew through Thursday, October 6, 2016 was likely an EF-1 tornado.

MUSCATINE COUNTY, Iowa — After a preliminary damage survey, the National Weather Service is reporting that the storm that blew through Thursday, October 6, 2016 was likely an EF-1 tornado.

The tornado was 30 yards wide and traveled a 9.5 mile path just after 10 p.m., NWS reports. It lasted from 10:07 p.m. until 10:18 p.m., starting four miles northwest of Muscatine and ending four miles south-southwest of Durant.

The tornado caused damage mostly to crops and trees, some were snapped at their trunks, the survey report said.  One hog farm had two outbuildings completely destroyed.

Damage surveying will continue Friday, according to the NWS. More information will be added as updates become available.

The NWS added that the information is “preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event.”
