Middle school students exposed to gas during prison guard training exercise

About 26 students were taken to area hospitals and clinics for medical attention.

MOUNT CARROLL, Illinois — West Carroll Middle School students on a field trip were taken to the hospital after accidentally being exposed to harmful gas.

The students were on a field trip north of the Thomson Prison AUSP around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, when the CS gas was released at the prison for a training exercise. Winds carried the gas to the students' location, says police.

CS gas is a tear gas used during riots.

About 26 students were taken to area hospitals and clinics for medical attention. Another 15 parents signed releases at the school and their children required no medical attention, police say.

More information is expected to be released Friday morning.
