WATERLOO, Iowa — If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of American history, you just may get the chance later this month.

Approximately 40 wild horses and burros will be adopted out from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) at an event in Waterloo, Iowa on October 21-22. The BLM protects, manages and controls wild horses and burros through the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.

Available animals can be previewed and adopted from 1-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. They will be available on a first come, first served basis. Adoption frees are $125 for animals 3 years or younger. All others can be adopted for $25. Second animals can also be purchased for $25.

The horses will be at the Pullin-Simonsen Arena at 257 Ansborough Avenue in Waterloo.

But these animals can’t be adopted out to just anyone.

Adopters must be at least 18 years old and be able to provide an enclosed facility with access to food, water and shelter. Adopters must have sturdy corrals that are at least 20′ x 20′ and 6′ high for an adult horse, and no less than 5′ high for horses younger than 18 months. Once adopted, the BLM requires that the horses be transported in a stock-type, step up trailer.

All animals available for adoption have been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, dewormed and blood tested (Coggins). These horses are considered wild and untrained.

Applications to adopt may be submitted at the adoption site until the end of the adoption on the 22. For more information on adopting through the BLM, visit www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov.
