DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Officials in Davenport are considering installing more than 20 cameras along a city street as part of a test program that could be expanded to other parts of the eastern Iowa city.

The City Council could vote on the proposal at its Oct. 26 meeting but the system wouldn’t operate until next spring, The Quad-City Times reports. Officials say the goal would be to enhance public and traffic safety.

Budget analyst Clay Merritt says there are many questions to resolve, including how many days to keep video on file, who would have access to the images and whether someone should monitor the video in real time.

Merritt says he couldn’t provide a specific cost of the program.
