Illinois avoids government shutdown with bipartisan deal

Congress has reached a deal to prevent a shutdown, just days before the government was set to run out of money.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois — Congress has reached a deal to prevent a shutdown, just days before the government was set to run out of money.

The bipartisan deal funds the government through December 9. It also includes more than $1 billion to fight Zika and $500 million for Louisiana and other states dealing with natural disasters.

One major sticking point was funding for the water crisis in Flint, Michigan. Both sides agreed to take up the issue in the lame duck session after the election.
