How to register to vote in Iowa and Illinois

The Presidential Election is Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Are you registered to vote?  You can register online, by mail or in person.

In Illinois:

To register online you’ll need: your driver’s license or state ID card, the last 4 digits and the date your ID was issued.  Click here to get started.

To register by mail you’ll need to download and fill out the form, and mail it in by October 11 to the following address:

Springfield, IL 62704

To register in person you’ll need to visit your State Board of Elections’ office, County Clerk’s office, or Board of Election Commissioner’s office. Click here to find out where to go. 

Remember these registration requirements

  • You must be a US citizen
  • You must live in the district in Illinois in which you want to vote by Oct 9
  • You must be 18 years old by Election Day, Nov 8
  • You cannot be convicted and in jail for a felony
  • You cannot claim the right to vote in another state

In Iowa:

To register by mail you’ll need to download and fill out the form, and mail it in by October 24th to your county auditor. Click here to find where to mail it to. 

To register in person you’ll need to visit your county auditor’s office, a Motor Vehicle driver’s license station, or a County Treasurer’s office that issues driver’s licenses and fill out a registration form. You’ll need to provide a copy of accepted ID.

Remember these registration requirements

  • You must be a US citizen
  • You must live at an Iowa address
  • You must be at least 17 ½ years old
  • You cannot be convicted of a felony (unless your voting rights have been restored)
  • You cannot be currently judged by a court as incompetent to vote
