FORT MADISON, Iowa -- A group of dead dogs found in a Dumpster prompted concern from a WQAD News 8 viewer.

"The fact that these animals were not bagged and just thrown in the dumpster for the world to see, that was the disturbing part," said Sandy Brown, Director of PAW Animal Shelter.

On Thursday, September 29, 2016, the Fort Madison Police Department confirmed that the dogs left at the Great River Regional Waste Authority had been euthanized "in the most humane and thorough way."

"We looked into it and then went to the landfill, our police department, and talked to them about it and they agreed to make a few changes to avoid this thing happening in the future," said David Varley, City Manager.

While police said that the way the animals were disposed of "is a permitted process," they were left in plain view of the public.

"In regard to the location and manner of the disposal, steps have been taken to assure that the disposal of the animals will be done in a more humane way in the future," read the police statement.
