One dead, four injured in shootings near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –  One person is dead and four others are injured in two shootings near the University of Illinois campus in Champaign, reports WGN.

This first shooting against just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, near the intersection of Green and Third Street.

Police say several shots were fired after an argument started at an apartment party there.

Four people were shot, one of them died from their injuries.

Police have identified that victim as George Korchev, of Mundelein, Illinois. Investigators say he was walking by at the time of the shooting and was not involved in the fight.

The other three victims suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital.

A fifth person was hit by a car as they ran from the scene, and suffered minor injuries.

Just after 1:00 a.m., a second shooting happened in the 700 Block of S. State Street.

Police say one person was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  They were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators believe both shootings are related.  They are looking for the gunmen in both shootings and the driver who struck the person after the first shootings.
