Conference works to remove stigma from mental health through education

Seven different speakers shared their personal stories about dealing with things such as depression, anxiety and addictions.

MOLINE, Illinois — Mental health was the topic of the day over at Black Hawk College in Moline on Friday, Sept. 23. The public was invited to attend the Mental Health Wellness Conference.

Seven different speakers shared their personal stories about dealing with things such as depression, anxiety and addictions. People also talked about alternative mechanisms such as hypnotherapy, all while trying to remove the stigma that often comes with behavioral health problems.

"It should be out in the open and discussed. One of the reasons we're bringing this here today is to discuss all the different options out there for people who want to maintain good mental health. Maybe who want to address some mental illness issues. It's just a really important topic to bring out to the community," said Abbey Roodhouse, BHC Program Coordinator.

On Saturday at 9:30 a.m., the Quad Cities local NAMI chapter is having a walk to promote mental health awareness at Modern Woodman Park.
