ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- More than 2,400 Quad Cities volunteers spent their day giving back to the community.

United Way's annual Day of Caring brought thousands out to tackle 110 different projects on both sides of the river.

One of those assignments was at Rock Island's Skip-A-Long Childhood Development Center where more than 50 volunteers helped install a Born Learning trail. They painted letters, shapes, and hopscotch, and they installed signs on posts. They also laid rubber mulch in the playgrounds and replaced shingles and wood on the storage shed.

The main goal was to help better prepare kids 0 to 5 for kindergarten.

Other projects took place at places like Davenport's Family Resources, QC Closet2Closet, and the Quad City Botanical Center.
