Fatal buggy collision in Iowa kills driver

Authorities say a Lime Springs man was fatally injured when his horse-drawn buggy was struck by a car near the northeast Iowa community.

LIME SPRINGS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a Lime Springs man was fatally injured when his horse-drawn buggy was struck by a car near the northeast Iowa community.

The collision was reported about 7:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, around 5 miles east of Lime Springs in Howard County. The Iowa State Patrol says a westbound car ran into the rear of the buggy, which also was headed west.

The buggy driver died later at a hospital. He was identified as 57-year-old John Borntreger. The car driver was identified as 57-year-old Sharla Lieder, also of Lime Springs. It’s unclear whether she was injured.

The collision is being investigated.
