AAA says Americans wasted $2B on premium gas last year

About 70 percent of vehicles now on the road require “only” regular fuel but, that’s not enough to stop eager drivers.

HOUSTON -- What if the reason you were spending "too much at the pump" was because of the type of gas you use?

AAA says Americans wasted over $2 billion last year putting expensive premium gasoline into cars --  that don't need it, reports NewsFix.

According to AAA, about 70 percent of vehicles now on the road require "only" regular fuel but, that's not enough to stop eager drivers. More than 16 million motorists unnecessarily filled up with premium gas at least once last year.

Premium has a higher octane rating than regular gas -- meaning it can tolerate higher pressures in the engine, which is good for mostly high-performance or luxury vehicles.  Using cheaper, regular fuel in these engines can cause damage.
