Men who beat dog with boxing gloves sentenced

The pair will spend 20 days in jail and one year on probation.

ROCK ISLAND -- Two Moline men found guilty of beating an elderly dog in October of 2015 will spend 20 days in jail each and be on probation for a year.

Andrew Meegan and Ryan Ramon, both 23, were sentenced in Rock Island District Court Monday. They were arrested a little less than a year ago after neighbors called police, claiming that a pair of men wearing boxing gloves were beating up a dog in a yard.

When officers arrived, police found Bear - a Chow-mix - bleeding badly from his eye. The dog - which court records show was owned by Meegan's father - was taken to an area shelter for rehabilitation and was successfully placed with a new owner at a later date. Meegan and Ramon were arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

In addition to jail and probation, the pair were also ordered to pay a $500 fine each and undergo alcohol and mental health evaluation, as well as serve 100 hours of community service.
