The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall Thursday for about 222,000 top-loading clothes washers sold in the U.S. due to a potential fire hazard.

According to the CPSC, three models of GE Profile high-efficiency top-loading washers are affected. The company has received 71 reports of internal washing components burning or catching fire. No injuries have been reported, but several of the fires caused more than $100,000 in property damage.

The washers identified are GE Profile models WPGT9350, WPGT9360 and WPGT9150.  All serial numbers are included. They come in gold, gray and white and measure about four cubic feet, with “GE Profile” printed on the front of the washers. Common retailers for these units are Best Buy, Lowe’s, The Home Depot and other appliance stores.

The CPSC recommends that consumers with these washers immediately unplug them and contact GE for a free repair.  This can be done by calling GE Appliance’s toll-free hotline at (877) 830-9732 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday or online at www.geappliances.com.
