Teen with rifle that prompted Davenport school lockdowns remains on the loose

Lockdowns issued at two schools on the west side of the city were put in place after police were alerted of a teen with a gun near West High School.

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Police are searching for a teen who was spotted with a rifle Wednesday morning, prompting two Davenport schools to go on lockdown.

The lockdowns were issued at Davenport West High School and Wilson Elementary when a "subject with a gun" was reported in the 1300 block of Waverly Road, according to a statement from the Davenport Police Department.  Officers were called to the area around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

When officers pursued the person "who was attempting to conceal a rifle," he dropped the gun and ran off, which started a chase on foot, the statement said.  Officers recovered the rifle and surrounded the area.

As of 11:30 a.m., police were still searching for the person, who was described as a black teenage boy with dreadlocks.  Police also said he was wearing a backpack and white shoes.
