CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Officers responding to a domestic disturbance at a Cedar Rapids apartment shot and killed a 25-year-old man suspected of stabbing his children’s mother.

The Division of Criminal Investigation says both officers responding to the call Monday night, September 12, 2016 fired their service weapons at Markell Bivins, who died of his injuries.

The agency didn’t name the officers or explain what prompted them to shoot. But it said Bivins is suspected of stabbing 25-year-old Raelynn Finn multiple times. Finn has undergone surgery for her injuries and is expected to live.

Court records show Bivins and Finn have children together. Bivins was charged last year with domestic abuse for allegedly punching her in the face while she was pregnant.

That charge was dropped due to an uncooperative witness, and the no-contact order was recently lifted.
