CHICAGO -- Chicago recorded the year's 3,000th shooting victim over the weekend.
Eight people were killed and 35 were injured over the weekend.
According to data collected by the Chicago Tribune, as of Monday, at least 3,028 people were shot, more than the 2,980 people for all of 2015.
That's almost a 50-percent increase over last year at this time.
Chicago now has more shootings than in all of last year.
Police say, one big factor in the increase is the ability of social media to let gang members escalate their personal disputes to the point of violence.
