DAVENPORT, Iowa-- Local Lutherans packed about 2,600 backpacks with food from the River Bend Foodbank, to make sure kids do not go hungry over the weekend.

As part of a nation wide day of service called "God's Work. Our Hands," dozens of volunteers from different churches in the Quad Cities participated in the Backpack Program.

The program helps 52 schools in the Quad City Area and is  designed to provide meals for children when school lunches are not available.

"We're doing a lot of work in a short period of time, with a lot of hands and a lot of feet," says Travis Fisher, pastor of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church in Davenport.

"It's good to be able to make such a great impact and as well as come together to serve together for the community and for the children of the Quad Cities,"  he says.

The backpack lunches will be given to the kids on Friday.
