AMES, Iowa – An Ames cat may have used one of its nine lives earlier this week when firefighters rescued it from a house fire on Labor Day.

The Ames Fire Department posted a video on their Facebook page showing firefighters using a special pet revival mask to save a family cat. The post has been shared more than 700 times on social media.

The cat, named Cleo, was rescued from the basement of a home and wasn’t breathing. Firefighters spent more than 30 minutes to bring her back to life.

Cleo was taken to Iowa State University’s Veterinary Medicine facility for treatment. Her owners said she is recovering well.

“Never go back into a burning building to rescue pets or loved ones, you can be overcome with smoke making it more difficult for us to rescue everyone. Let the professionals make the rescue, we have the training and equipment to be successful!” the fire department said in its post.
