One man injured in Dixon officer-involved shooting

The injured man was airlifted to Rockford.

DIXON, Illinois — An officer-involved shooting in Dixon Wednesday morning sent one man to the hospital with serious injuries.

Officers were called to the 800 block of West Third Street at 11:34 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, after a woman called 911 and reported that a man had his girlfriend held hostage at knife point. Only a few minutes later, police arrived to find the man standing on the front porch with a knife, say police.

Officers' attempts to deescalate the situation did not work out.

A second man walked out onto the porch from the house and the first man stabbed him in the stomach. Officers tried to Taser the armed man, but were not successful. Two of the seven officers at the scene fired their guns, and the armed man was hit in the abdomen, leg and wrist, police say.

The injured man was transported to the hospital in Dixon and was then airlifted to a Rockford area hospital with unspecified, but non-life threatening injuries.

Names of the victims have not yet been released by authorities.

The incident remains under investigation, and an independent investigation of the officer involved shooting is being conducted by the Illinois State Police. Once the investigations are complete, they will be forwarded to the State's Attorney for review.

“Officers go their entire career hoping to never use their firearm, but there are some situations where they are left with no choice.  This is one of those situations.  Today, our police officers showed incredible bravery in the face of danger, and because of their actions, they saved the life of an innocent person,” said  Chief Danny Langloss.
