MOLINE — Contractors working on the final phases of the Interstate 74 bridge repair project raced and won against predicted rain to get the Iowa-bound lanes finished and opened by Wednesday afternoon.

John Wegmeyer, Illinois Department of Transportation project engineer, said final lane painting and barrel removal began in earnest earlier this week. The hope was to make sure the paint striping had time to dry before rain and storms delay it.

The bridge project snarled bi-state traffic in the corridor beginning last March. The work was supposed to wrap up by the John Deere Classic Golf Tournament in late August, but an Illinois budget impasse and wet summer weather conspired to slow down the work.
