ROCK ISLAND, Illinois-- Superintendent of the Rock Island-Milan School District, Mike Oberhaus addressed shortage of funding because of the state budget problems during his State of the Schools speech, Tuesday, September 6.

He says the district is spending $2,000 less per student than the state average, with more of the district's money going towards classroom programs than in many other districts.

"We are very prudent with the dollars that have been given to us to educate our kids.  (W)e will continue to do so and always try to maximize that utility of dollars that are available, so our kids can have the greatest opportunity that we can possibly give them," says Oberhaus.

He also mentioned changing up the school's English Language Arts and Math programs this year, to promote less students memorization, and encouraging more critical thinking and class discussions.
