GALESBURG, Illinois — Lake Storey Beach in Galesburg is officially closed to swimmers during the Labor Day weekend and won’t reopen until Memorial Day 2017, says the director of parks and recreation Tony Oligney-Estill.

Oligney-Estill says that heavy rains earlier this week caused storm water runoff, which is why the beach will be closed for the upcoming holiday weekend. The lake beach closed earlier this week and water samples were sent out for testing.

Boat rentals and concession stand will still be open for the weekend. Fishing is also still allowed, though officials say fish should be rinsed and cleaned in fresh sanitary water before eating.

“Patrons are encouraged to take safety precautions, which include not touching the lake water and hand washing,” says a statement of Oligney-Estill.
