GENESEO, Illinois — The trial for a Geneseo veteran accused of lying about this military service is on hold. William Jones, 66, is charged with theft of government funds and making false statements to the government.

Federal prosecutors say Jones submitted paperwork for disability benefits that he didn't qualify for, including fabricating paperwork that he had been wounded overseas, served in Vietnam and received combat medals. These documents were fake.

Jones was scheduled for trial August 1 but federal court records say his trial was delayed indefinitely while he is given a full psychiatric evaluation.  Jones is out on bond with conditions of release, including the surrender of his gun safe key.
