PARKVIEW, Iowa - Businesses in Parkview, Iowa are still trying to get back up and running on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 after severe weather caused thousands of dollars in damage.
Earlier this month a severe storm ripped through the town... leaving businesses still recovering from the storm, one month later.
We lost absolutely everything, everything but our clients,” says Karen Ambort, Owner of The Hair Off 61 Salon.
“I just didn't feel like we were moving forward,” remembers Ambort.
On August 4, 2016 Karen’s salon was in the middle of the storm’s path. The first sight of her salon was unrecognizable
News 8 was there when Karen and her business partner Stacey saw the damage for the first time.
“I feel like someone took my salon and dumped it upside down,” says Ambort.
Now, things are slowly coming together for Karen.
“Once it got completely empty it was easier to come in here. When we were seeing damaged stuff it was really hard to come in,” added Ambort.
For Karen, starting from bare concrete and studs has been bittersweet.
“I thought i could salvage some of the stations but once we tore them apart there was so much mold in them they had to go in the garbage which about killed me,” says Ambort.
Thanks to the support from the community and the salon next door offering work space in the meantime, Karen says her loyal clients are what keep her moving forward.
“Everyone is very loving, very understanding everyone wants to help. It will be interesting to see how it all pulls back together,” says Ambort.
Karen hopes to re-open her doors by Thanksgiving 2016. She says the appearance will be very different but the atmosphere and love for her clients will still be the same.
"The Hair Off 61" just recently celebrated their 5 year anniversary in the Parkview area.
